HP Introduces Simplified Enterprise Desktop PC

Hewlett-Packard Co. has launched the HP e-Vectra desktop computer, the first in the company's planned line of e-PCs developed as large-scale enterprise desktop machines with a heavy focus on support and reliability.

The new e-Vectra has no floppy disk drive or PCI or ISA slots, and contains only two PS/2 and two USB ports for limited attachment of unsupported peripherals. The HP port-control system will enable IT staff to select and deploy specific desktop configurations with predetermined peripheral connections. The port-control system locks USB, serial, and parallel ports, and the full solution locks in place with an HP master key, allowing only IT staff to open hundreds of machines with the same key. The HP e-DiagTools diagnostic tool software agent runs in the background and scans the e-Vectra for problems, informing HP support staff if any are found.

The e-Vectra is configured with Intel Pentium III or Celeron processors; Windows 98, NT 4.0, or 2000; up to 256 MB SDRAM; a Quantum 8.4-GB Ultra ATA/66 hard drive; 3Com Fast Etherlink 10/100Base-TX integrated LAN solution; parallel and serial ports; on-board audio; and optional 24X CD-ROM drive.
