Compaq Boxes Clusters

Compaq Computer Corp. will soon offer clusters in a box.
The Houston computer giant today announced a cluster
solution, code-named “Toucan,” that pairs two ProLiant server nodes with shared
storage in a single cabinet. The package runs on Windows NT or Novell NetWare
and is scheduled for fourth quarter availability.
Compaq says Toucan will feature
easily accessible components; redundant, hot-swappable parts; integrated
installation; and diagnostic and management tools for Web-based cluster
administration.
Although Compaq touts the
unreleased product as the “most-affordable, ready-to-use packaged cluster,” the
company has yet to announce pricing.
Compaq also today unveiled
enhancements to its current line of clustering products. Existing cluster
configurations using the Oracle Parallel Server now support Oracle Parallel
Server 8i, the version of the parallel database clustering software supporting
Oracle Corp.’s most recent version of its flagship database.
Compaq has also enhanced its existing
Microsoft Cluster Service offerings with support for redundant loop and
switched fabric fibre channel storage and disaster-tolerant configurations. – Scott Bekker
