Role-Playing With Microsoft Exchange Server
At a major summit in September, Microsoft’s top executives
announced a renewed emphasis on designing software that’s
adaptable to individual job functions. That “role-based”
administration is among the key features in a
limited-release
beta of Microsoft’s messaging server, which Microsoft
planned to send to 1,400 customers and partners on Wednesday.
Don’t Wait: Fix IE Flaws Now
Microsoft issued a security bulletin this week addressing serious
vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, rating the threat as “critical.”
Scott
Bekker explains why Microsoft customers should jump on that
information immediately.
IM, I Said; IM, I Tried*
It’s all over the blogosphere this week: Microsoft is apparently
soliciting
testers to try out Windows Live Messenger, the upcoming new
version of its popular IM software.
“It’s as fun and reliable as the Messenger you already
know,” says an electronic invitation posted on several techie
and user blogs. “Plus this new version has a fresh new look
and feel, and [it] lets you do things you’ve never done with
Messenger before,” including making inexpensive PC phone calls
and providing special folders for off-line access.

Dream Up a Name, Win a Gift Certificate
If your schedule has been anything like mine lately, you’ve
been rushing all over town -- and all over the Internet -- in the
annual dash to buy holiday gifts for everyone from your children
to your co-workers to the neighbor kid who delivers your newspaper.
Here’s your chance to get a nifty gift for yourself, and
it won’t cost you a cent. Just help us name -- or, more accurately,
re-name -- the product-coverage department that runs in both the
print and online versions of Redmond Channel Partner.

Currently, this department is known as “Product Spotlight.”
That moniker is more generic and less enticing than we’d like,
and it’s a bit redundant as well: Another RCP department
also goes by “Spotlight” (although in that case, it
fits better).
So we’d like to come up with a jazzier title for our product
corner. Or, more accurately, we’d like you to help us come
up with a jazzier title by entering the first RCP Rebranding Contest.
Here’s how it works. Take a look at a few recent Product
Spotlights in the magazine or online.
Then dream up a dandy new title. E-mail it to me with “RCP
Rebranding Contest” in the subject line. Our in-house judging
panel will review all suggestions; the winning entry will earn its
author a $50 gift certificate good for anything on Amazon.com.
The rules:
- Enter as many times as you like. Feel free to include multiple
entries in a single e-mail message, if you wish.
- E-mail entries to [email protected]
by 6 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
- Limit titles to 1-3 words. Don’t use the word “spotlight.”
- Avoid suggesting titles that are already being used for similar
departments in other publications.
- Be sure to include full contact information, including your
e-mail address and phone number.
We’ll announce the winning submission -- and credit its author
-- in a future Redmond Partner Update. Meanwhile, put on
your thinking caps!
