Microsoft Commerce Exec Leaves for Electronic Arts

Rajat Taneja, a 15-year Microsoft veteran who most recently served as the vice president of Microsoft's Commerce Division, is leaving the company to become CTO of game software publisher Electronic Arts (EA), a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed.

Microsoft has not disclosed when Taneja's last day will be, but the spokesperson said that the company is "actively looking to fill Mr. Taneja's role."

Taneja's latest position at Microsoft put him in charge of the company's commerce platform, which encompasses the technologies that run several of Microsoft's cloud-based services, including Office 365, Windows Azure and Xbox Live. It was a role he held for just a few months; as longtime Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley reported at the time, Taneja's appointment as head of the Commerce Division was announced in early May as part of a wider reorganization of Microsoft's Server and Tools Division spearheaded by Satya Nadella.

Before that reorg, Taneja served as the corporate vice president of Microsoft's Online Services Division, where he was responsible for the engineering component behind the company's digital advertising efforts. According to his Microsoft bio, during his tenure within the Online Services Division, Taneja also supervised the engineering team behind Bing and MSN product search.

Taneja also spent six years in the Microsoft Business Division, where he oversaw the development of Microsoft's various small-business products, both hosted and desktop-based.

According to an EA release, in his new role as CTO, Taneja will be responsible for EA's global technology decisions and investments.
