Acer Trims 2007 Computer Sales Forecast

Taiwan personal computer vendor Acer Inc. expects its computer shipments to increase 30 percent to 40 percent this year, a reduction from previous sales forecasts.

The company trimmed earlier expectations of shipment growth that it said would "easily" surpass 40 percent in 2007, because of a weaker-than-expected effect on sales by Windows Vista, Microsoft Corp.'s new operating system, Chairman J.T. Wang said Thursday.

The company's 2006 personal computer shipments totaled about 14 million units, up 39 percent from the previous year.

"It needs more time for consumers to adopt Vista," Wang said after the company's annual shareholders meeting Thursday. "I am still optimistic about our shipment growth, but I was even more so before."

Acer overtook Lenovo Group Ltd. in the first quarter to claim the No. 3 spot for the number of personal computers sold.
