Oracle, Dell Partner on 10g for Windows

Dell and Oracle this week began jointly promoting a packaged offering of Oracle's low-end Standard Edition One version of its 10g database on Dell hardware and running Windows Server 2003.

Previously Dell and Oracle only offered the packaged deal on the Red Hat Linux operating system.

Oracle prices the Oracle 10g Standard Edition One database to compete with SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition. (See this article for ENT's in-depth look at the pricing issues with the two databases.) Standard Edition One is limited to two processors.

Dell and Oracle are aiming the package, which includes the Oracle database pre-installed on Dell servers, at small businesses and enterprise departments.

The package is available immediately on Dell PowerEdge 2850 servers. The partners plan to extend the package to the Dell PowerEdge 2800 server in the fourth quarter. The packages include the PowerVault 220S external storage system.
