Intel Releases New Xeons

Intel on Monday shipped new Xeon processors for dual-processor servers and workstations. Computer manufacturers were delivering new systems this week loaded with the new 3.2-GHz Intel Xeon processors with 1 MB of cache and a 533-MHz system bus.

Intel says the processor is targeted for general-purpose server functions such as Web hosting, data caching, search engines, security, streaming media and high-performance computing grids. Intended workstation functions include computer graphics. The chip is drop-in compatible with the Intel E7501 server chipset and the Intel E7505 workstation chipset.

Intel priced the processor at $851 each in 1,000-unit quantities. That's about 25 percent more expensive than the next processor in the dual-processor-capable Xeon chip line. A 3.06-GHz processor with 1 MB cache is currently priced at $690. The lowest price chip in Intel's dual-processor Xeon lineup is the 2.4-GHz model with 512k of cache at $198.

The existing lineup of dual-processor Xeons did not drop in price on Sunday in advance of the Monday launch, although Intel did drop prices on mobile processors. Prices on 14 models of Centrino mobile processors dropped by 1 percent to 30 percent and four models of Mobile Intel Pentium M processors fell from 13 percent to 34 percent.
