HP to Ship Workstations with New Version of 64-bit Windows XP

HP will begin volume shipments on Thursday of Itanium 2-based workstations with the new Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit Edition Version 2003 operating system.
Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 became generally available April 24 with the launch of Windows Server 2003, Visual Studio .NET 2003 and SQL Server 2000, Enterprise Edition (64-bit). It is Microsoft's second version of 64-bit Windows XP. The first 64-bit Windows client operating system shipped at Windows XP's launch in late 2001.
HP will offer customers the choice of Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003, HP-UX or Linux on two of its workstations, the zx2000 and zx6000. With the new Windows OS, the workstations will start at $3,711.
The zx2000 is a uniprocessor system with a 900-MHz Itanium 2 processor, maximum memory of 8 GB, six expansion slots and up to 292 GB of SCSI storage. The HP workstation zx6000 is a dual-processor system with 1-GHz Itanium 2 processors, maximum memory of 24 GB, four expansion slots and up to 438 GB of SCSI storage. Windows XP memory support is currently capped at 16 GB of RAM.
Potential applications for the powerful workstations, according to HP, include mechanical computer-aided design and analysis, scientific research, oil and gas, imagery analysis and software development.
