AMD Releases New High-end Athlon

AMD refreshed its line of multiprocessor chips for servers and workstations this week with the introduction of the AMD Athlon MP 2600+.

The Athlon MP 2600+ is AMD's current top-of-the-line processor. The 32-bit chip costs $273 in 1,000-unit quantities. AMD says it is expected to be available immediately in systems from 49 system builders worldwide.

The processor is built on a 0.13-micron copper processor technology. AMD offers single-processor and dual-processor chipsets for system builders.

The AMD chips compete with Intel Xeon processors, which dominate the low-end server market for x86 instruction set processors and range in price from $224 to $455 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
