Windows XP Code Finished

As expected, Microsoft Corp. Friday morning announced that its embattled Windows XP operating system is released to manufacturing.

The step, which means the code is complete and is being shipped to manufacturing plants and to OEM partners, is the key final step for meeting the widespread availability target date of Oct. 25. OEM partners, like Dell and Compaq, may have Windows XP-based systems available sooner.

Microsoft announced separate pricing for the two main versions of Windows XP. Windows XP Home Edition will cost $99 for an upgrade and $199 new. Windows XP Professional will cost $199 for an upgrade and $299 new. Windows XP Professional will also come in a 64-bit version.

Earlier in the week, Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer told attendees at a Sao Paulo technology conference that Windows XP would probably be ready Friday.
