Cold Feet Quashes Corel

The proposed merger between Corel Corp. and Inprise/Borland Corp. has been called off due to changes since the merger was announced. Citing “significant changes” since the deal was announced, Corel axed the merger this morning.

Corel (www.corel.com) has recently gained attention by its aggressive Linux marketing, including its port of the WordPerfect word processing application. Inprise/Borland (www.inprise.com) is best known for its line of compilers and developer tools.

Speculation centers around the concerns voiced by Inprise/Borland stockholders, particularly the US/Canadian exchange rate. A few Inprise/Borland stockholders felt that they were not getting a fair deal in the merger. When their stock was tied to Corel’s, the value of the stock slipped considerably. - Christopher McConnell
