Navision SP1 Available with New Employee Portal

The first service pack for Microsoft Business Solutions-Navision 4.0 became available to some customers on Monday, marking the start of a tiered release.
SP1 delivers an Employee Portal and makes general quality improvements to the business management software suite for small and mid-sized companies and divisions of larger companies. Navision includes financial management, supply chain management, customer relationship management and e-commerce functionality.
To create the Employee Portal, Microsoft pulled elements from Navision, Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. The Web-based interface is designed to make it easy for employees to work with business information in a secure, intranet environment. The Employee Portal is also intended to allow an expanded set of users to access, modify and create data.
The quality improvements in SP1 that Microsoft is highlighting include inventory costing enhancements, planning resiliency, partner-targeted support for SQL Server 2005 and new SQL properties, and a new dynamic link library for developers.
Navision has 48,000 customers, according to Microsoft.
Last month, Microsoft disclosed plans to more closely integrate its Microsoft Business Solutions offerings, including Navision, under the name Microsoft Dynamics. Those changes are supposed to take effect with the next full releases of the products in 2006.
