Windows SharePoint Services Updated

Windows SharePoint Services, Microsoft's free team collaboration technology for Windows file servers, learns a few new tricks in a service pack posted this week.

With the newly posted Service Pack 2, Windows SharePoint Services adds new extranet and intranet usage scenarios; supports x64 editions of Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and SQL Server 2005; and supports .NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005. The newly supported usage scenarios include reverse proxy, IP-bound virtual servers and off-box SSL termination.

SP2 for Windows SharePoint Services is available from the Microsoft Download Center here. The 5 MB download includes stability and performance improvements and all the fixes included in SP1.

In announcing the availability of SP2, a Microsoft spokesperson also noted that when Windows Server 2003 R2 ships, it will support "one-click installation" of Windows SharePoint Services. Microsoft is currently promising that Windows Server 2003 R2 will be released to manufacturing by the end of 2005.
