HPC Market Growth Strong

High-performance computing is becoming more common and less expensive, according to analysts at IDC.
In a meeting of the IDC HPC User Forum this week in Japan, IDC's Earl Joseph shared some of the market research firm's data. In the first half of 2004, HPC revenues increased by 39 percent to $3.4 billion. Unit shipments nearly doubled (a 98 percent increase) to 70,190 units. For the full year, the HPC market added about $1 billion in revenue, Joseph said.
At the same time, the average selling price for HPC declined 30 percent to $40,100.
The IDC figures come as Microsoft prepares a major push into high-performance computing. The company plans a beta in the first half of the new Windows Server 2003, Compute Cluster Edition, and a production version in the second half of the year.
