Hardware, Software Vendors Roll Out Windows Storage Server Offerings

Hardware and software vendors jumped on the Microsoft's launch of Windows Storage Server 2003 Wednesday with a host of hardware devices shipping with the new OS and software releases that run on the Network Attached Storage solutions.
Windows Storage Server 2003 is a version of Windows Server 2003 optimized for storage performance. The OS is available only as part of complete NAS systems sold by hardware vendors.
Hardware vendors offering NAS devices include Dell, EMC, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, INLINE, Iomega, MaXXan Systems and NEC. Software vendors supporting the offerings out of the gate include CommVault Systems, Computer Associates, KVS, Legato Systems, NSI Software, NuView, Quest Software and VERITAS Software.
In addition to supporting agent-based management of Windows Storage Server devices on Microsoft's own Microsoft Operations Manager and Systems Management Server, the new OS supports similar management via CA Unicenter, HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli. While the new storage-specific OS won't support business applications like SQL Server or Exchange Server, it will run backup applications, anti-virus software and other utilities that are commonly run on file servers.
Some of the storage hardware products announced Wednesday include the Dell PowerVault 775N and 770N, the HP StorageWorks NAS 2000s, the Iomega NAS P400m, the INLINE FileStorm, the MaXXan SG110m NAS gateway appliance and the MaXXan SG210m application card. The EMC NetWin 200 is not yet available, but that will also run Windows Storage Server 2003. HP has plans to roll out Windows Storage Server 2003-based products across its Windows-powered NAS line by the end of the year, expanding support to the 1000s, B3000 and the E7000.
