More Robust Quota Management Planned for Windows

Administrators should have more granular control over storage quotas in future versions of Windows under an agreement between Microsoft Corp. and Precise Software Solutions.
Microsoft will license Precise's TruStor quota management technology, which is the real-time quota management technology in Precise/StorageCentral SRM, for future versions of Windows.
Microsoft introduced limited quota management capability in Windows 2000. In 2001, Microsoft licensed the Precise technology for the Server Appliance Kit, which Compaq, Dell and IBM used to produce the Windows Powered line of NAS devices.
The new agreement widens Microsoft's use of Precise technology to all Windows server operating systems.
"Having the ability to manage disk space quota at a fine-grained level and across the enterprise is very valuable to our customers," Ben Fathi, Microsoft's director of core file services, said in a statement.
Microsoft is between operating system releases. Windows 2000 has been out for more than two years. The follow-on server operating system, the Windows .NET Server family is expected to enter the release candidate phase in the next few months.
Microsoft's decision to embed TruStor technology in Windows is a significant validation of Precise's approach. Precise will continue to sell more full-featured quota management software for customers who want additional quota management functionality.
