Altiris Shows Off Application Management Tool

Altiris Inc. unveiled a new product this week at the Microsoft Management Summit for managing and maintaining applications by extending the functionality of Microsoft Windows Installer.
Altiris Application Mgmt Solution, slated for availability at the end of this quarter, helps administrators package applications and then scans them to maintain the original installation state.
“One of the challenges for companies is keeping the desktops updated and making sure that they stay current and that any changes that are made to those desktops do not corrupt files or applications on the system,” says Tyler Smith, vice president of marketing at Altiris. “One of the highest costs for companies is when they have to dispatch somebody from a help desk to a user’s desktop.”
According to Altiris, Application Mgmt Solution addresses those problems through proactive scanning of applications. The tools are designed to automatically replace application files that have changed from their original configurations.
The Application Mgmt Solution grew out of application conflict analysis functionality Altiris had been developing in some of its other products.
The product will cost $11 per node for 100 nodes. It will also be available in several of Altiris’ management suites.
