Intel Speeds Up Xeon DPs

Intel Corp. this week shipped a faster version of its new Intel Xeon processors for dual-processor servers and workstations. Hewlett-Packard Co. immediately announced new systems based on the faster 2.4 GHz chip.

The new Intel Xeon DP features 512 KB of L2 cache and is a 0.13-micron chip. The new 2.4-GHz version costs $615 each in 1,000-unit quantities. Previously, the fastest Xeon DP was a 2.2-GHz version, which costs $465 in 1,000-unit quantities.

The Xeon family is the highest performance Intel 32-bit processor. An MP version of the Intel Xeon is available for four-processor-and-larger SMP systems.

According to Intel, several vendors will be shipping systems based on the new 2.4-GHz Xeon DP in the next few months. They include Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Gateway Inc., HP, IBM Corp. and SuperMicro Inc.

HP on Tuesday announced that it would integrate the processor into the HP Workstation x4000 in May and the HP Server tc6100 in July.
