Compaq Gives Indication of Exchange 2000 Market Penetration

In announcing a new utility-style offering for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Compaq Global Services gave some hard evidence for how much Exchange 2000 is penetrating the Exchange user base.

Compaq's figures show that about 12 percent of the Exchange seats it has deployed or has under contract are on Exchange 2000 as opposed to Exchange 5.5 and earlier versions of the e-mail server.

Microsoft frequently updates the world on the spread of Exchange seats, with its most recent pronouncement hitting 100 million seats. However, Redmond has thus far studiously avoided saying what percentage of those seats are Exchange 2000 versus other versions.

But in an effort to establish its competence to offer the new Exchange "on demand" utility service, Compaq this week said that is has more than 15 million Exchange seats deployed or under contract, a statistically significant amount of the overall Exchange universe.

Of those, Compaq claims 1.8 million seats are on Exchange 2000. A 12 percent Exchange penetration is roughly in line with what industry analysts have estimated. Although the e-mail server has been available for almost two years, deployment is hindered by its dependence on Windows 2000 Active Directory.

Meanwhile, Compaq calls its new service "Applications on Demand for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server." It is part of a broader set of Compaq Computing on Demand offerings.

Targeted at larger companies, Compaq offers a mix of service and delivery strategies with Exchange 2000 on demand, including on-site hosting with remote management by Compaq or off-site hosting and monitoring.
