Sun Trawls for NT 4.0 Customers

Looking to capitalize on Microsoft's announcements that it will retire support for Windows NT 4.0, Sun Microsystems is offering a competitive upgrade to its Cobalt appliances.
The deal, called the "NT Upgrade Campaign," covers certain Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliances and Sun Cobalt Qube appliances. It lasts until June 30.
According to Sun, discounts on the Linux-based appliances range up to 20 percent, with prices starting at $1,349 for the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 server appliance and $1,399 for Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliances.
In a statement about the program, Sun also alluded to Microsoft's recent controversies surrounding security.
"Windows NT customers will find that with these plug-and-play server appliances, they can enjoy the convenience of hassle-free computing and support without sacrificing privacy and security," said Peter Ulander, director of marketing for the Sun Cobalt division.
Microsoft announced its roadmap for ratcheting down support for Windows NT 4.0 back in December, although the company offers its own upgrade programs for customers to move to Windows 2000.
The company stopped selling volume licenses of Windows NT in October, and will stop selling packaged versions of Windows NT in the retail channel in July. Customers will start to have to pay for support for Windows NT at the beginning of 2003, and online support will be phased out by 2005.
