Exchange Server Hits 100 Million Seats

Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday trumpeted a modest jump in Exchange Server seat licenses sold that gets the company to a nice round number with lots of zeroes behind it -- 100 million users.
"We are the first to reach that mark. We now believe on any measure, any metric, that Exchange has exceeded [Lotus] Notes. The public battle has always been around seats sold, and we think we've started to build a distance now," says Chris Baker, lead product manager for Microsoft Exchange. "The 100 million has a distinct ring, and it’s nice to say that we have that milestone."
The last time Microsoft said how many Exchange licenses were sold was at the Microsoft Exchange Conference in October, when Microsoft claimed 94 million seats. The 100 million seat announcement represents a 6 million user jump in about three months.
By comparison in the four months leading up to the MEC show, Microsoft jumped from about 75 million Exchange seat licenses -- a figure announced in June.
As with the previous announcements, Microsoft declined to specify what percentage of the seats are Exchange 5.5 or earlier and what percentage represent Exchange 2000 Server seats.
