Updated Active Directory Migration Tool Will Precede Windows .NET Server Release

PHILADELPHIA -- Microsoft Corp. plans to release the final version 2.0 of its Active Directory Migration Tool before it ships the next full version of Windows .NET Server.
Stuart Kwan, Microsoft's group program manager for Active Directory, said the first release candidate for ADMT 2.0 shipped on the Windows .NET Server Beta 3 CD, released in November. The final version is likely to be included with Release Candidate 1 of Windows .NET Server Family CDs, Kwan said Tuesday at the Techmentor Summit on Active Directory here.
Microsoft's Active Directory Migration Tool is designed to help administrators in several steps of the migration from Windows NT domains to Active Directory structures.
Features new to the 2.0 version include support for password migration from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 and across Windows 2000 forests. ADMT 2.0 also supports scripting.
The first version of the tool allowed for pre-migration diagnosis of potential problems and included wizards for walking administrators through migrating users, groups and computers; setting file permissions; and migrating Exchange Server mailboxes. The tool also allowed for rollback in many situations in case of problems. It featured support for parallel domains for maintaining existing Windows NT domains while deploying Windows 2000.
Documentation for Microsoft's original version of the Active Directory Migration Tool was last updated in March of this year.
