Maxtor Ships Windows-Powered NAS Filer

Maxtor Corp. launched a Windows-powered, 1U file server with 400 GB of storage space this week.
The Network Attached Storage appliance is one of the new generation of devices based on Microsoft's Windows 2000 Server Appliance Kit 2.0.
That Server Appliance Kit is built on Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and it represents an interim step for Microsoft in its embedded server software strategy. Microsoft had an embedded version of Windows NT 4.0 Server, but the company won't release its next fully embedded server operating system until a few months after the release of Windows .NET Server early next year.
The Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4300 file server is designed to be a cross-platform NAS appliance. Maxtor preloads Windows Services for Unix 2.1 and Windows Services for NetWare 5.0 to allow interoperability with those operating environments.
Four Ultra ATA/100 Maxtor internal hard drives give the thin device its storage capacity. The MaxAttach NAS 4300 also carries an 866 MHz Pentium III processor and 384 MB of SDRAM.
The Maxtor MaxAttach NAS 4300 file server is available immediately and costs $5,999.
