Intel Signs Agreements to Sell Flash Memory

Intel Corp. this week
signed a pair of purchasing agreements with two major providers of Internet
infrastructure to sell its flash memory.
An agreement signed today between Intel and Siemens AG will provide Siemens with flash
memory for three years for next-generation, Internet-ready cell phones and
wireless devices. An agreement signed earlier in the week with Cisco Systems Inc. features a three-year
commitment by Cisco to purchase Intel’s high-density flash memory devices,
including the Intel StrataFlash memory technology.
First introduced by Intel in 1988, flash memory is now
common in many consumer and infrastructure products, including digital cameras
and MP3 players as well as network routers.
In April, Intel introduced its first flash memory chips
produced on 0.18-micron lithography, enabling the company to nearly double the
number of chips produced on each wafer. The company plans a dedicated flash
facility in Colorado to come online this year. – Isaac Slepner
