SNIA Opens Technology Center

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) today unveiled its Shared Storage Model at the opening of the SNIA Technology Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The new storage model and the center mark the latest efforts by the SNIA to create industry standards for the growth of the storage industry.

A roadmap for the storage industry, the Shared Storage Model includes a vocabulary that will enable vendors to better explain how their products fit into the storage architecture. The model differentiates the various solutions that comprise the storage industry, including the roles played by storage applications, the underlying infrastructure, and the auxiliary services.

At the SNIA Technology Center, storage and networking product developers will be able to work together with application vendors, system integrators, and service providers. The vendor-neural site includes a neutral demonstration facility and test sites for self-certification. This will enable vendors to test their storage components in an environment similar to one they would experience at a customer site. The center will also offer educational programs and symposiums.

The 14,000-square foot facility is expected to house equipment from the SNIA, which currently includes 174 members spanning the entire storage industry.

A not-for-profit organization, SNIA members include IBM, Network Appliances, BMC Software, Compaq, EMC, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Sun Microsystems, and Dell. – Jim Martin
