Dataquest: Worldwide Semiconductor Revenue up 31 Percent in 2000

Preliminary reports from
Dataquest
Inc. indicate that the worldwide semiconductor market reached $222.1
billion in revenue in 2000. Overall, revenue increased 31 percent compared to 1999, but
there still remains concern due to the slowdown that the market experienced at
the end of the year.
Dell retained the number
one position with a 13.4 percent market share and $29.75 million in revenue,
but there was some shake-up at the top. With year-to-year growth of 47.2
percent, Toshiba overtook NEC for the
number two spot. NEC fell one spot to third
overall, with 11.081 million in revenue, a 20.3 percent revenue increase from
1999. The top 10 was rounded out by Samsung, Texas Instruments, Motorola,
STMicroelectronics, Hitachi, Hynudai, and Infineon Technologies.
From a regional perspective, the Americas region was number
one, with revenues of $71.7 billion in 2000, an increase of 29 percent. The
number two region was Asia/Pacific, followed by Japan at number three and
Europe at number four.
Despite the slowdown in sales during the fourth quarter, the
Dataquest report says “we see no reason to believe that this current weakening
is anything lese other than an inventory correction.” – Jim Martin
