Dell Posts Record 2-way TPC-C Result

Enterprise IT managers looking for fast low-end servers get a wash in a new transaction performance benchmark result from
Dell.
The computermaker sported a 2-processor PowerEdge 4400 for the Transaction Processing Performance Council OLTP benchmark, the TPC-C. While narrowly edging the former reigning performance champ in the class, a Compaq ML530, the PowerEdge does so at a higher cost.
Dell's PowerEdge conducted 16,262.90 transactions per minute on the TPC-C (tpmC), less than 1 percent better than Compaq's result posted back in March.
Dell's cost per transaction of $16.82 is 6 percent higher than Compaq's. That despite paying less for memory -- Compaq paid about three times as much for the same 4 GB of RAM.
Both companies ran the test using two-processor servers outfitted with 800 MHz Pentium III processors, Windows 2000 Advanced Server and SQL Server 2000.
Dell's total system cost came in at $273,486.84, including two client machines, a Giganet clan 5000 switch and 157 disk drives. -- Isaac Slepner
