Big Blue Ships Windows 2000 Systems

IBM Corp. this week announced new desktop and notebook computers pre-loaded with Windows 2000. The systems span Big Blue’s line of models from the ThinkPad notebook, PC 300 desktop and IntelliStation professional workstation series, and offer security features that complement those found in Microsoft Corp.’s upcoming operating system.

Several of the desktop models preloaded with Windows 2000 -- including the IBM PC 300PL, IBM IntelliStation E Pro and the IBM IntelliStation M Pro -- come standard with an embedded security chip. IBM is working to optimize the interaction between the security chip and Windows 2000 to push the level of PC security to a new high.

IBM's systems will also offer an integrated hardware and software security solution that supports Windows 2000 and prevents unauthorized users from accessing sensitive information.

Additionally, the IBM Smart Card Security Kit can accompany any PC or mobile computer to deliver one of security for Windows 2000. Identity verification and authentication features will complement encryption capabilities embedded into Windows 2000.

For customers upgrading to Windows 2000, IBM is offering a Professional Upgrade Kit, containing a Windows 2000 upgrade CD as well as a Windows 2000 System Solution CD that provides migration hints and tips, BIOS updates, device drivers, and service and support information. Customers will be charged a shipping and handling fee for the kit.
