Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens Enter TPCC Fray with 8-Way NT-SQL Results

Two more industry vendors have reached the top tier of Windows NT performance on new 8-processor machines in the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC,
www.tpc.org) benchmark.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers (www.fujitsu-computers.com) reached 40,696.25 transactions per minute on the TPCC benchmark (tpmC) earlier this month with a Primergy K800 system. The mark was the best achieved on the benchmark for seven days until Compaq Computer Corp. (www.compaq.com) re-acquired the TPCC lead by edging past Fujitsu Siemens with a score of 40,697.2 tpmC on Dec. 20.
Meanwhile, Dell Computer Corp. (www.dell.com) vaulted into the 40,000+ tpmC results range in late November with its first published results on the 8-way PowerEdge 8450. Conforming to its reputation, Dell's system combines respectable performance with a lower price point of $14.86/tpmC. Most of the other systems have come in above $16/tpmC.
All three systems become available in the next week.
Unisys Corp. (www.unisys.com) also has published TPCC results in the greater than 40,000 tpmC range under the configuration - an 8-way machine loaded with Windows NT 4.0 Server, Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 7.0.
IBM Corp. (www.ibm.com) and Hewlett-Packard Co. (www.hp.com) have not released TPCC benchmark results with their 8-ways, although they have published results for the machines on other benchmark tests. - Scott Bekker
