Symantec to Spin Off New Internet Company

Symantec Corp. (www.symantec.com) announced its plans today to spin out its Internet Tools business unit to create a new, independent company with focus on the enterprise market.

The new company will focus on e-commerce and technology for Web enabling business systems and legacy applications. It will also continue to support Symantec's development flagship VisualCafe.

Creating an independent company will put the spotlight on our expertise and capability as an Internet company," says John Thompson, president and CEO of Symantec. "The new company will be able to focus more clearly on the needs of customers in this arena, compete more effectively and move faster to take advantage of functions opportunities as they arise."

Thompson believes that spinning out the Internet tools division will enable the Symantec left behind to focus more competently on building security and connectivity solutions.

The new company is expected to be formed in the next three to nine months and Symantec expects to open it up to third party investors. Approximately 120 employees in development, marketing, sales and administrative will transfer from the Internet Tools business unit to the new company and they will be joined by more employees that the company plans to hire. -- Brian Ploskina
