Compaq, Houston Still Having Problems

It seems Compaq Computer Corp. takes its spring cleaning seriously. The latest to get swept away is John Rose who was in charge of the enterprise division for the hardware giant.

Taking Rose's place on the hot seat will be Enrico Pesatori, who will also continue in his role as senior vice president of corporate marketing. Michael Capellas has been named acting chief operating officer for Compaq and will report directly to Ben Rosen, chairman and acting CEO.

After stints with SAP AG (www.sap.com) and Oracle Corp., Capellas came to Compaq in 1998 and became senior vice president and CIO. His COO position is a new one at the company created by Rosen. "Creating this new COO position is an important step in realigning Compaq's organization to speed decision-making and improve execution," Rosen says in a company release. "With Michael's appointment, we expect to improve our focus on meeting our customers' requirements."

It just doesn't pay to make a lot of money at Compaq. In April, the company dispatched of then-CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer and then-CFO Earl Mason. Following them out the door were Mike Heil, senior vice president of sales and marketing and John Rando, senior vice president and general manager of Compaq services.

The ax began swinging when Compaq realized it had recorded much lower than expected earnings for the first quarter of this year. -- Brian Ploskina
