Microsoft Acquires Web Load Balancing Software Company

Microsoft Corp. announced yesterday that it acquired Valence Research Inc. (Beaverton, Ore., www.valence.com), a developer of TCP/IP load-balancing and fault tolerance software. Valence Research's Convoy Cluster enables customers to build Internet Web farms with up to 32 cluster nodes, which appear to clients as a single computer using one IP address.

The product will be renamed Microsoft Windows NT Load Balancing Service. It has already been deployed on microsoft.com and MSN.com. Microsoft announced it plans to make the Microsoft Windows NT Load Balancing Service available as a standard component of Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition.—Michele Rosen, Staff Reporter/New York Correspondent
